Doing keyword research before writing anything is something I just started taking seriously. Picking main topics then subtopics all based on keyword research is very important. If an article is written with out good supporting subtopics then the likely hood that the article will be on top is very unlikely. Picking topics and subtopics that you can compete on are critical.
